What is all the ‘Buzz” about?

The VW ID. Buzz is Volkswagen’s successor to the “Microbus” from days gone by. The VW electric microbus is a concept electric vehicle boosting a technology-packed cockpit with a roomy interior to comfortably seat 7 people! The ID. (Intelligent Design) Buzz uses the VW’s Modular Electric Drive kit which contains a group of components and chassis parts engineered to maximize the potential of electric drive and future technology.

Designed to bring back memories of the original “Type 2 Microbus”, the ID. Buzz sports a light strip that surrounds the vehicle and gives it a unique visual appearance. The LED headlights have hexagonal segments that act as “eyes” to communicate the vehicle’s status. With near-zero body overhangs and 22-inch wheels, the ID. Buzz looks super modern and timeless, while maintaining the world recognized Volkswagen brand design. There’s even a flat trunk, reminiscent of the original VW Beetle.

For more bells and whistle, the ID. Buzz is very innovative and comes with a foldaway steering wheel, popup laser scanners in the roof, and a heads-up display with integrated augmented reality.

How does the ID. Buzz compare to the original Microbus?

Remember the first VW Microbus that sold in the United States in 1950 had only 30 hp. The ID. Buzz concept will be the seventh generation of the bus and has a massive 369 hp from electric motors on each axle that also provide all wheel drive capability and the 111 kWh battery pack in the floor will take you nearly 300 miles! What about charging the ID. Buzz? Well, using the VW fast-charge system, you can recharge about 80 percent of the vehicle’s energy capacity in 30 minutes at 150 kW.

VW is also working to introduce their autonomous technology in future models, i.e., “ID. Pilot”, that you may see on the showroom floors in 2025. The ID. Buzz is set to be released in the Unites States, Europe, and China in 2022. For more information, images, and updates, check VW’s Electric Vehicles.
