Overview of the Tesla Roadster
Ok, so Elon Musk wants to make the fastest car in the world? The second-generation (the first was Lotus-based in 2008), all-electric 2021 Tesla Roadster is predicted to be the super-car of the future with the following specs:
- 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds (ouch!)
- 0-100 mph in 4.2 seconds
- 1/4-mile time of 8.8 seconds
- Top speed > 250 mph (i.e., many speeding tickets)
- SpaceX option package (optional)
- Range of 620 miles
Now, if the 2021 Tesla Roadster can deliver such performance numbers, then it will be 1 second faster than its main rival – the “McLaren 570S”! Can you believe that? Hmm, let’s come back to that later.
The Tesla Roadster has the signature Tesla front end, but is more aerodynamically designed with seating for four and a removable glass roof. Where do you put the roof? – well, in the trunk of course.
So, you want one right? Well, for now the base price is $200,000, but you can order the Founder Series model for a little bit more ($250,000) with just a $50,000 deposit. Expected delivery is late Summer 2021.
Will the Vehicle Hover?
But wait – will it hover? Well, Elon Musk claims he’s working on adding rocket technology so it can hover over the ground, about 1 meter from the ground. Keeping it to 1 meter, Elon claims, “If you plummet, you blow out the suspension, but you’re not gonna die”. Hmm, that’s good to know and somewhat reassuring. This is where the “SpaceX option package” comes in which could equip the Roadster with a pressurized fuel vessel and several thrusters. Now, if this technology doesn’t come to fruition, then the Roadster could just be equipped with rear thrusters to make it super-quick. Maybe those performance numbers will be accomplished after all!
